Chapter Sixteen

The buzzing of a phone on the nightstand roused Sean. He cracked his eyes open to see it moving.

A sleepy murmur from the woman beside him made him smile. He placed a kiss on her forehead before reaching for the phone.

It was Peter. “Let me call you back in two minutes.” His second agreed and hung up.

Sean slid out of bed. He chuckled as Lisa burrowed into the warm spot he left behind. He covered her with the sheet before leaving the room.

He found a coffee maker in the small kitchenette area of the suite. After turning it on, he noticed a room service menu. Sean quickly perused it and then used the suite phone to call in his order. Then, he went back to sit at the dining table.

The luxurious decor of the suite took some getting used to. Sean wondered if the wealthy really lived like this all the time.

It hadn’t seemed to phase Lisa at all the night before. She must be used to this, being Lord Andre’s second. This was something else that convinced him that he shouldn’t hook up permanently with Lisa. They were from two different worlds.

Pushing the unwanted thought to the back of his mind, Sean called his second-in-command.

Peter picked up on the first ring. “I found out how they ambushed the dragons.”

“How?” Sean eyed the coffeemaker, but it was still brewing. His head was still foggy from the pain meds and exercise from the night before.

“A fake police car pulled them over. When the driver rolled down the window, a magician cast a stun spell over the occupants.”

Sean winced. Stun spells were nasty things. The spell literally froze a body in place for a short period. The mind was still active and aware of what was going on.

“That had to be one powerful spell to knock out five dragons.”

Peter hmphed on the line. “According to the young dragon who was flying over them and watching, the spell barely worked on the Alpha. But he didn’t see much after the Alpha exited the car because he was told to go get help.”

“Why didn’t the young dragon try to help?” Even a young dragon in his full form was a formidable fighter.

“This dragon was only fourteen years old. It was supposed to be a low-risk drive, and they use teens to fly over their high-ranking members to build up their flight muscles.” Peter’s voice conveyed his disdain at that practice.

Sean could see how it would help the young dragons. Someone with more experience should have been with him. But most dragons didn’t have military training, either.

“He was able to see at least ten attackers. At the scene, the investigators could tell that the Alpha had killed a couple of them. Although, they didn’t leave any of their dead behind.”

At least the dragon alpha didn’t go down tamely. While Sean didn’t know the Detroit alpha, he hated the thought of any family being killed for stupid reasons. And all of this to force a young dragon to grab an artifact.
